Seattle police pursue a stolen garbage truck in Capitol Hill which ended in destruction and the arrest of an 18-year-old suspect whose motives remain unknown. The theft occurred shortly after 6 a.m. behind the Seattle Police Department’s East Precinct building, the driver approaching the desk clerk after the 18-year-old suspect allegedly jumped into his running garbage truck and drove away. Prior to that, the truck driver told police the man had been harassing him in the alley on the 1500 block of Pine Street. The SPD reports the garbage truck wasn’t hard to find traveling through the Pike-Pine Corridor, with patrol cars following behind. “It was quite a long, little jaunt in the garbage truck,” said Police Detective Patrick Michaud . The suspect struck several parked cars and a Pronto kiosk, damaging 10 bikes, according to the bike share kiosk operator, at Bellevue Avenue and Pike Street. Extra docks will be installed later this week at Pine and Bellevue. The garbage truck stopped only after a head-on collision with another waste truck, which caused a diesel spill and blocked the roadway for several hours Tuesday morning. The alleged vehicle thief ran away on foot, but was taken into custody soon after, according to police, and booked into King County Jail for investigation of auto theft and malicious mischief. Police report he only had a learner’s permit to drive.
